New Year, New You, New Job?
It’s that time of year for reflection and planning. All over NZ, people are lying on the beach (or erm keeping warm at home in some places!) and thinking about what a new year, a new decade might look like for them.
In the recruitment world – we experience a flood of applications post summer break. People who have decided to look around and explore what other organisations may be offering. So, if you have decided that 2020 is your year, and that you are going to start looking around; here is some advice:
You are one of many many people who are looking right now, and it is easy to be overlooked for jobs. If you have applied to some roles and haven’t heard back, send through a polite follow up email (and keep in mind that many companies place ads prior to the break but might still be on holiday or catching up, and therefore may not be reviewing applications right now).
While the job market is buoyant – you have a lot more competition for roles right now. Many people return home from overseas right now, and those with good OE experience are being snapped up, so don’t assume that it is going to be easy to get the job offer for your dream job! We know many exceptional candidates who have recently been second for a number of roles – so competition is fierce.
Searching for a job takes time and effort. There is nothing worse than a half hearted attempt at a job search. Half an application, a resume that isn’t updated, and calls that aren’t answered. If you are serious about this, then invest the time to ensure you are putting your best foot forward. We’ve got loads of resources to help with resumes, interview questions and applications – so you have zero excuses!
It’s a great time to reconnect! It’s a brilliant time to catch up with people in your network. They might be good recruiters, mentors, people you admire or past colleagues. So get on the phone and start making time to reconnect – your next role could depend on it!
Good luck and all our best wishes for a prosperous 2020!
